ReportsAt Timor October 1831; reported 16 October 1832 lost on a coral reef [9 February 1832] north of the Solomon's [Ontong Java Islands]
NotesHobart Town Courier , 19 April 1833 , The Frindsbury, whaler, Capt. Duncan, struck on a coral reef in lat. 5 S. long. 115. 19. E. [actually 5.02S 159.19E], and was obliged, after every exertion, to be abandoned by the crew, who saved themselves in three boats. In the attempt to get clear of the wreck the boats were overset, and three men perished, and the provisions and instruments that had been put in them were lost. Subsequently they were righted, and on getting clear of the wreck they mustered in all 32 hands. One of the boats with 11 on board made sail to the southward (2nd Mate's boat), and has never since been heard of. The other two boats kept together for some time till they were parted in a gale of wind, and that in which Capt. Duncan was has never been heard of [Duncan made it to Ternate after he and the crew being imprisoned on the New Guinea mainland 0n 17 December 1832]. The remaining one, in which the chief mate was steered for Carteret's' harbour, in New Ireland, where they had formerly a scanty supply of provisions and water. After two months sojourn among the natives, they were taken up by the Isabella of London, which was passing, and carried into Batavia. The Singapore Chronicle records that Captain Duncan and his boat made their way to Ternate and after having been help by the natives for a period of six months were picked up by the schooner, Success, of Ternate where they arrived 17 December 1832.

Search help

Limiting your search
The dropdown menus beside the Search button will limit your search to a single database or single entity (masters, vessels...) You can use either dropdown separately or both together.
Multiple words
The search engine treats multiple words as if they were combined with AND. For example, if you enter
Morgan Charles
you will find any records that contain both
Morgan
AND
Charles
, in any order.
Stemming
Words you enter are automatically treated as 'stems', that is, as if there were a wildcard at the end. So, if you enter
whal
you will find records containing
whale
,
whaleboat
,
whalers
, or
whaling
. This also works with dates. Entering
183
will match all years in the 1830s.
Exact match
To match an exact phrase, enclose in quotation marks, for instance,
"Charles W. Morgan"
Case-insensitive
Searches are not case-sensitive.
Punctuation
Punctuation marks are anathema. If you want to search for something that includes punctuation, enclose your search in quotation marks.

Code tables and Column definitions

For each database there is a page with values for codes and abbreviations used in the tables as well as definitions and usage information for each database column. Find it through the Databases entry in the main menu.

Advanced search: Data Viewers

Researchers who want more sophisticated data management capabilities should explore the Data Viewers available for each database. Data Viewers are listed under the Databases main menu entry. There is also a Getting Started page that explains how to use all Data Viewer features: The Data Viewer Interface.
