Notes | Vessel turned back after initial departure. On 29 March 1843, Spratly sighted what is now known in English as Spratly Island and Ladd Reef. His sighting was reported in The Nautical Magazine in the year 1843, issue 697. Also reported by the Barque Chusan that the Cyrus grounded on shore for 26 hours in the Macassar Strait around 25 July 1843. Evening Mail , Friday 09 February 1844 , reports rocks and breakers in Lat 8:43 N Lon 111:43 E lying SW and by W of the West London Reef 20 miles , also a shoal five miles in extant in Lat 7:42 N Long 111:37 E least water seven fathoms. The Cyrus was on it two days and named it Cyrus Bank. It is supposed to be the same bank previously reported as Pearl Bank. Shipping and Mercantile Gazette , Thursday 27 July 1843 , a salvage court case brought by the owners, masters and crew of the Marshall Bennett, Australasian Packet and the Cyrus for assisting the barque Ann on her voyage from China to London 14 June 1842. The Marshall Bennett awarded 1200 pounds, , Australasian Packet 300 pounds and the Cyrus £200. Shipping and Mercantile Gazette , Monday 02 September 1844 , a court case was before the Courts accusing the master of the Cyrus, Captain Spratley, of abandoning two seamen. On the 1842 cruise ?? Heron at Kema Island and George Landsdell 15 years on the 1838 cruise. |

- Punctuation marks are anathema. If you want to search for something that includes punctuation, enclose your search in quotation marks.
Search Results

- Full records are available: Click on the icon at the left edge of any search result to view the full record.
- Sort by columns: Click on any column heading (Destination△▽) to sort results by that column. Click again to reverse the sort order.
