ReportsArrived at Port Jackson 1 July 1798; reported at Tahiti 24 to 27 August 1798; reported 17 September 1799 at Port Jackson September 1798; reportedly called again at Tahiti en route to the west coast of South America where in early 1799 the Cornwall captured in company with the Kingston and Sally the Nostra Senora de Bethlehem [Nuestra Senora de Belen] bound from Callao to Guayaquil; reported by the Kingston at Table Bay from around Cape Horn 6 May 1800
NotesOperated as a privateer and took a captured Spanish vessel into Port Jackson. From the Morning Post , Monday 05 January 1801 , the Ship Cornwall, Blyth, master, from the Southern Whale Fishery, had a severe engagement in the night of the 27th December about 25 leagues West of the Scilly with a large French ship privateer, of 20 guns; the Cornwall received many shots in her hull, had near eleven feet of water in her hold, and was quite water, logged when the privateer made off. The Annual Register or a View of the History Politics and Literature for 1803 suggests that the Cornwall ariived in London with a Tahitian named Mydowe. It also records that Spanish prize taken by the Cornwall on west coast of America in early 1799, the Nostra Senora de Bethlehem (renamed Hunter), picked up two other Tahitians, Oly and Dididee, who after sailing via Port Jackson landed in London.

Search help

Limiting your search
The dropdown menus beside the Search button will limit your search to a single database or single entity (masters, vessels...) You can use either dropdown separately or both together.
Multiple words
The search engine treats multiple words as if they were combined with AND. For example, if you enter
Morgan Charles
you will find any records that contain both
Morgan
AND
Charles
, in any order.
Stemming
Words you enter are automatically treated as 'stems', that is, as if there were a wildcard at the end. So, if you enter
whal
you will find records containing
whale
,
whaleboat
,
whalers
, or
whaling
. This also works with dates. Entering
183
will match all years in the 1830s.
Exact match
To match an exact phrase, enclose in quotation marks, for instance,
"Charles W. Morgan"
Case-insensitive
Searches are not case-sensitive.
Punctuation
Punctuation marks are anathema. If you want to search for something that includes punctuation, enclose your search in quotation marks.

Code tables and Column definitions

For each database there is a page with values for codes and abbreviations used in the tables as well as definitions and usage information for each database column. Find it through the Databases entry in the main menu.

Advanced search: Data Viewers

Researchers who want more sophisticated data management capabilities should explore the Data Viewers available for each database. Data Viewers are listed under the Databases main menu entry. There is also a Getting Started page that explains how to use all Data Viewer features: The Data Viewer Interface.
