Notes | Draco of New Bedford log records Tuesday 25 August 1846 that Captain George Coffin of the Brothers died at 6pm from the jaundice and was buried at Copang; The name of the firm owning this vessel is subject to some uncertainty. Various Lloyds sources record the owners as A & J Hill but the Lisle document issued in 1848 by the Enderby's clearly records the owners as Hill, Boulcott & Co. Kerry Evening Post 8 September 1847 reports that in April 1847 the Brothers took into tow the Paul Jones, a vessel which had been on its way to the Swan Colony. The vessel was under the control of some malay seaman on board who had killed Captain Middlecot, mate Grensel and two seaman. A few seaman who could navigate were spared. The Brothers took the Paul Jones into Copang where the surviving seaman advised the authorities of what had happened and the malays were arrested. |
Search help
- Limiting your search
- The dropdown menus beside the Search button will limit your search to a single database or single entity (masters, vessels...) You can use either dropdown separately or both together.
- Multiple words
- The search engine treats multiple words as if they were combined with AND. For example, if you enter
Morgan Charles
you will find any records that contain bothMorgan
ANDCharles
, in any order. - Stemming
- Words you enter are automatically treated as 'stems', that is, as if there were a wildcard at the end. So, if you enter
whal
you will find records containingwhale
,whaleboat
,whalers
, orwhaling
. This also works with dates. Entering183
will match all years in the 1830s. - Exact match
- To match an exact phrase, enclose in quotation marks, for instance,
"Charles W. Morgan"
- Case-insensitive
- Searches are not case-sensitive.
- Punctuation
- Punctuation marks are anathema. If you want to search for something that includes punctuation, enclose your search in quotation marks.
